While some people tend to gloss over Red Deer while driving in-between Edmonton and Calgary (and vice versa), you’d be surprised with how much of the town you might be missing out on. If you’re thinking of flooring it on Highway 2 to get to either city in less than two and a half hours, we at Go Auto Outlet suggest you should schedule a rest break in-between your journey and enjoy some of the sights that this small Albertan town has to offer.
Go Auto Outlet’s Red Deer location is just a short trip from some beautiful parks and ponds, along with some notable sights and landmarks that might interest you. It also helps to have some incredible eatery along Gasoline Alley to entice you in staying for a bit. Read on to learn more about some places you may want to visit while you’re in town!
If you plan on visiting Bower Ponds, we suggest making an entire day of it. Bower Ponds has been a staple in family fun and recreation for several years, with dozens of activities for anyone to enjoy. You can take the kids to go paddle boating and play in the playground, as well as taking the dogs out for a walk along the pet-friendly trail. There’s so much to do in Bower Ponds that we could dedicate an entire post to this, but we’re only scratching the surface with what you can do in Red Deer.
Kerry Wood Nature Centre
Located inside the heart of Red Deer, the Kerry Wood Nature Centre offers several diverse programs geared towards the education of natural history and environmental conservation. It’s a great place for kids and adults alike to learn more about the nature and geography of Alberta, as well as the natural history of Red Deer. The facility also offers beautiful walks around the lake during the summer and snowshoeing during the winter. You can even stop for a quick picnic on the grounds to take advantage of the beautiful day.
Much in the same vein as Bower Ponds, Heritage Ranch offers plenty of activities and events, except it’s geared towards corporate events, parties, and even romantic getaways. For example, Heritage Ranch also offers date night events that include private sleigh or carriage rides through the property, followed by a five-course meal at the Westlake Bar and Grill. The restaurant offers fine dining for a casual, yet classy dining experience with an atmosphere and service that truly exceeds expectations. For those that are heading down a more serious path in their relationships, you can even book your wedding on the ranch, and all of your accommodations will be taken care of as you take in the beautiful vistas on your special day.
Honourable Mention: The Donut Mill
Even if you end up passing through Red Deer for just a quick pit stop, you can’t leave without buying a pack of dozens from the famed Donut Mill along Gasoline Alley. With its iconic windmill-designed building, this family-run bakery has been a go-to destination for travellers along Highway 2. On top of their delicious Venetian cream donut, they also make really great chilli and sandwiches that will make you want to stay and dine inside as you grab an Oreo & orange creamsicle donut for the road.
This was just a small taste of what you can do in the town of Red Deer. We hope you’ll get to spend more time around here and visit Go Auto Outlet’s Red Deer location when you get the chance!
